Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) or Clean India Mission was a country-wide drive from 2014 to 2019, to reduce open elimination and develop solid waste management (SWM) in urban and rural areas in India. The goals of the mission also carried elimination of manual scavenging, creating awareness and appealing about a behavioral change about hygiene practices, and the development of capacity at the local level. Launched by the Government of India, the purpose aimed to reach an “Open-Defecation Free” (ODF) India by 2 October 2019, the 150th birthday of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. The purpose intended at progressing towards target 6.2 of the Sustainable Development Goals, set by the United Nations in 2015.

In the second stage of Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural), Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet scheme centered on the sustainability of ODF and the administration of solid and liquid waste. The following phase will be executed on a purpose mode in 2020-21 and 2024-25 with an expected central and state budget of Rs 52,497 crore, the Jal Shakti Ministry said in a statement.

Swachh Bharat

The campaign’s real name is in Hindi, in English, it turns to “Clean India Mission“. The campaign was formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2 October 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi. At a gathering in Champaran, the Prime minister called the campaign Satyagrah se Swachhagrah about Gandhi’s Champaran Satyagraha originated on 10 April 1916

Swachh Bharat Mission

The purpose was divided into mainly two parts; in rural areas, SBM – Gramin which was supported and controlled through the Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation; whereas SBM – urban was undertaken by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

As a member of the campaign, volunteers, identified as Swachhagrahis, or “Ambassadors of cleanliness”, improved indoor plumbing and community approaches to sanitation (CAS) at the village level.

“A clean India would be the biggest tribute India could pay to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150 birth anniversary in 2019,” said Shri Narendra Modi as he originated the Swachh Bharat Mission at Rajpath in New Delhi.

While driving the mass movement for sanitation, the Prime Minister urged people to fulfill Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a clean and hygienic. PM Modi presented the slogan of ‘Na gandagi karenge, Na karne denge.’ Shri Narendra Modi also asked people to follow the cleanliness drive and asked each of them to draw nine more into the initiative.

Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin)

The Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan has been restructured its name into the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin). The purpose intends to make India an open defecation free country in Five Years. It attempts to improve the levels of sanitation in rural areas through Solid and Liquid Waste Management projects and making Gram Panchayats Open Defecation Free (ODF), clean and sanitized.

Under the purpose, INR 134,00,00,000 rupees will be used for the development of approximately 11 crores of 11 lakh toilets in the country. Technology will be accepted on a large scale to turn waste into wealth in rural India in the form of bio-fertilizer and different forms of energy. The purpose is to be accomplished on a war basis with the association of every gram panchayat, panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad in the country, besides roping in large parts of the rural population and school teachers and students in this effort.

Incentive, as given under the Mission for the development of Individual Household Latrines (IHHL), shall be prepared for all Below Poverty Line (BPL) Households and Above Poverty Line (APL) households assigned to SCs/STs, small and marginal farmers, landless laborers with homestead, physically handicapped and women-headed households. The Incentive amount given under SBMG to Below Poverty Line i.e. BPL /named APLs households shall be up to Rs.12,000 for production of one unit of IHHL and provision for water availability, including for storing for hand-washing and sanitation of the toilet. Central Share of this Purpose for IHHLs shall be approx Rs.9,000/- (75%) from Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).The State part will be approx Rs.3,000/-(25%). For North Eastern State, and Special section States, the Central part will be approx Rs. 10,800/- and the State portion approx Rs.1,200/- (90% : 10%).

Pradhan Mantri Toilet Yojana is a scheme for urban/rural people. The toilets are to be built in rural areas where even today the toilets could not be built. The Prime Minister’s dream is to have toilets in everyone’s home, so the Toilet Scheme was started.

Under the Prime Minister’s Toilet Scheme, the government gives you 12,000 / – (twelve thousand rupees) which are directly deposited in your bank account, and there is no middleman in it. INR 12,000 rupees are directly transferred to your account. Once the SBM website start reflecting on your screen. You are shown in the screen below, something like this.

Now you will first see Swachh Bharat Mission Target Vs Achievement based on Detail Entered, you will have to click on it. After clicking, a new window will open in front of you. Now you will have three options in which you will see All-State, All-District, All Block.

To see the name in the toilet list/toilet list, you have to enter your information in these three columns. First of all, you have to take your state, after which your district is in any district in which you live, now you have to take your block i.e. Tehsil, after that you have to click on View Report in the last. Then a new window of Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin will open in front of you.

This is the list of toilets/toilet list, you will see some options in it. You will see the list of all the villages in your tehsil. Now you will find out in front of your village how many people have got toilet money in your village. That is, how many people have filled the form, how many people have been allotted toilets, how many people have passed the form, how many people have been rejected. Which people come to BPL etc.

Now you will see the year in front of your village from 2014, to current year, you will see letters in blue color under it, you have to click on it. Post that, you will also find out how many people have been given toilets in the village. After clicking, you will see the toilet list/toilet list.

Now the list of complete toilets will come in front of you, just you have to find your own in this list of toilets and if your name comes in this list, then understand that you have been added to the toilet plan and the toilet plan is Rs.12,000 / – twelve. Thousands will be put in your bank account.

Swachh Bharat Mission Urban

The Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM-U), began on 2nd October 2014 points at making urban India free from open elimination and delivering 100% scientific control of municipal solid waste in 4,041 statutory towns in the country.

The Objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban are discussed below:

  • Removal of open defecation
  • Elimination of Manual Scavenging
  • New and Scientific Municipal Solid Waste Management
  • To achieve behavioral change about healthy sanitation practices
  • Create information about sanitation and its linkage with public health
  • Capacity Augmentation for ULB’s
  • To build an enabling environment for private sector support in Capex (capital expenditure) and Opex (operation and maintenance)
